And then there was one...

Yep, so I'm the only one left now. The entire suite is bare and empty- it feels like a penitentiary. Pretty much done with packing, the only thing left to do is finish the last paper I have left: a 15 pager for American Grand Strategy. Gonna pull an allnighter for this one so expect late night updates while I'm procrastinating. Stocking up on a couple of Red Bulls and drinking coffee soon enough. The goal is to finish without legitimately loosing my sanity. Wish me luck, have a good summer.

With focus and determination,
Greg

Gooooooooood morning!

It's 3:15 AM, do you know where your overachieving, perfectionist, Hopkins students are?

My mom and dad should be told I'm in the library and will be until sunrise. Boy-o-boy!

In tired delirium,
Greg

PS- My sanity is slowly slipping away!

Oh what a fun weekend!

This is going to be short.

I have quite a weekend to look forward to. Right now, I'm feverishly studying for a midterm I have tomorrow (they call it a "quiz" it's really a midterm). Beyond that, I have a paper-midterm to work on. It's supposed to be 16 pages at the most but the questions asked can't be answered in any less than 20- this will be a challenge! The one down part of the weekend is a Spoon concert that I HAVE to go to unfortunately. After that, I have a weekend full of helping a very good friend of mine shoot a film. Oh, I have much to do!

Sarcastically,
-Greg

Quick thing I want to say: Shooting film is fun but exhausting. Example? This past Monday night/Tuesday morning, I helped someone shoot in the Hut from 11 to about 4:30 in the morning. The downside was sleep deprivation. The craziest thing of all that was, there were people in the Hut well until we left. What the hell? Also, I'm going to try out signing the end of my posts like the end of a letter. Give it a little personal touch.

Mike McConnell @ JHU

Admiral Mike McConnell was appointed as the Director of National Intelligence this past February. He came to Hopkins today to have a question and answer session. For such a high-profile figure in Government, the event was all it was expected to be. There was the very flat political line-giving typical of talks by those involved in politics, there was sidestepping questions deftly, there was a bleeding heart liberal doing his best to make the government-man eat crow, and there was also bland questions from the student populous.

Some points (paraphrased):
  • Despite McConnell's insistence that this particular paraphrased point wasn't the case, he "agrees that water-boarding is justified in some situations and that it's a useful means to gather information." (The quote is the best approximation of Prof. Davis' sum up of McConnell on water-boarding.)
  • McConnell wants to overhaul how the Intelligence department recruits college graduates- make it more efficient (take much less time).
  • It doesn't matter that the intelligence community never predicted the collapse of the Soviet Union- "all that matters is that we won." (Quote is his.) Intelligence, nor President Regan, had little to do with the Soviet collapse- it was capitalism that should be responsible for the USSR's collapse.
  • Iran is not a threat for nuclear weapons because, although it is developing fissionable material for civil purposes, it has abandoned its development of delivery weapons.
  • The above point was a declassified key judgment in the National Intelligence Estimate- these, the declassified key judgments, will no longer be made in future NIEs.
  • Al Qaeda's goal is to create a pan-Arabic state and uses terrorism to force Europe and the United States out from the reigons that would comprise this pan-Arab state.
There are a bunch of things he said that I obviously disagree with or beg to differ. The most interesting point to me is the last one I noted. He went on record (the event was being taped by CNN) on saying that Al Qaeda's goal was to force the US and Europe out of a potential pan-Arab state. If this truly is the government stance on Al Qaeda's motive, then there's a really quick fix to the insecurity caused by terrorism on US soil.

If Al Qaeda's trying to force the United States out of the Middle East, why not comply? They have said numerous times that that's what they wanted. They've also said that if we comply, then they'll leave us alone. Why not just leave the Middle East and ignore it like we've ignored Cuba for the last 50 years?

Aren't there problems with just leaving the Middle East high and dry, you ask? Yes, most of it includes how we're going to meet our needs for energy without dealing with the Middle East for oil. But we forget that there are alternative energy sources that are already available. Making the entire country adapt to these new changes (like buying more plug in hybrids, more renewable resources for electricity, taking advantage of ethanol from organic waste, and generally moving completely away from oil) is the hardest part logistically. But with gas prices heading towards 4 bucks a gallon and the cost of oil being at an all time high, wouldn't the cost be a moot point? If the peak oil hypothesis is true (which it seems to be) we're going to have to make these changes either way.

Now truth-be-told, I don't think this is the correct thing to do. As the sole superpower of the world, the United States maintains a measure of unspoken responsibility in regards to international affairs, especially within the Middle East. What I think should happen is another editorial for another day. But just there mere admission of that last point- I don't understand why more people aren't making the argument I've just made.

From the depths of the Library at Johns Hopkins University...

Hello, hello, and greetings to all from the depths of the Milton S. Eisenhower Library at Johns Hopkins University! I've currently been in here for the last 7 hours or so writing a paper (I'm so screwed). Enough about me- let me say some things that's been on my mind recently.

First thing, the Oscars were this past weekend. A couple of thoughts: I'm very pleased the academy didn't pull a clunker like last year giving Scorsese Best Picture for the piece of crap that was The Departed. (I understand the man deserved an Oscar after all those horrible snubbs, but The Departed, frankly, sucked.) No Country For Old Men deserved every reward it earned. I might go as far and say it was snubbed a couple awards, namely for Sound Editing. I mean, The Borne Ultimatium won for that but before No Country, did anyone know what a silenced shotgun sounded like? did the subtle background noises (or lack thereof) not add to the dark intensity of the film? I feel horrible for PT Anderson and There Will Be Blood. It was such a great film its own right but didn't get the recognition it could have gotten had it been released another year. I was pleased that Daniel Day-Lewis got the Oscar for Best Actor- he deserved that one ("I DRINK YOUR MILKSHAKE- I DRINK IT UP!" might be one of the greatest lines ever). One last thing I'll say about this: how did Cate Blanchett not win Best Supporting Actress for her role in I'm Not There? I mean, during the film, I forgot it was a woman playing this Bob Dylan character. I think that was the most upsetting thing about this year's Academy Awards for me.

Another thing: I've been sitting here in the library for the last couple hours and I've come to the conclusion that the soundtrack to Amelie might be the best thing to listen to while studying. First, it's great mood music- makes you want to be active or productive or something. Second, it makes you feel great- you want to be happy or in love or something. It's perfect. I recommend you listen to it while studying or doing work the next time.

It hurts me to try and follow the primaries right now. So much crap being flung back and fourth in the media... it makes me ashamed of studying this. I really hate electoral politics right now- if you want to talk about the nonsensical and petty character of politics, congress is no better (don't they have anything better to do?).

I'm gonna go get another cup of coffee (is that number 7 today?) and get back to work now. I have a long night ahead of me.

Edit: One more thing: This coming Thursday (March 6) I'll be preforming stand up with 13 other comics from Hopkins at the Arnello Theater in the basement of Levering. This is prelims for DC Improv's funniest college competition. The show will feature 13 of us, me included, and 3 professional comics, one as a host and two as the closing acts. If you guys aren't doing anything, please come support us. Thanks a lot.
